As a member of the lazy media, I can only add that vendors in Altar say numbers compared to June last year are way down and so do those at Grupo Beta. So something is up (or rather, down) but it could be that traffic was through the rood in the Spring (so say vendors, shelter operators and Grupo Beta numbers. ) so there are now less people around to cross. Fear in Altar is traffic has shifted away rather than impact of National Guard.

As to feds releasing true numbers, yes yes of course. They should.

Very good points on feds dishonest numbers, and lazy media.

What is the status of the FOIA requests? Seems like a challenge in court may be needed.

I was cracking up this morning when I grabbed our paper and read across the very top headline under our banner "Presence of National Guard scaring off border crossers." Bah. It surprises me that there's so much of a rush- as you said- to go to print with something because everyone else has it and it seems true. We've seen it time and again:Juan and Pablo get caught, opt to be sent back to the border, jump into taxis, go to the bus station, wait for the bus, hop on the bus, go to Sasabe and they're crossing again. I wish everyone could see that in action. It really lends some perspective to the effectiveness of our "tag-you're it" tactics.
