DM: You are right about that. My wife is a naturalized Honduran with an accent in her English, but she always carries her U. S Passport with her, especially when we are coming or going to "the other side". Yes it saves us longer sessions of question anwering.

Richard, what about naturalized citizens? They still have accents. Race-based profiling always makes lots of sense when you're not a member of an affected race.

To Jack: Why would your "legal Mexican-American" friends be nervous?
If they are truly Americans born of Mexican ancestry, their English should be non Spanish accented. That's the first tip off to "La Migra" that a Latin looking person may not be here legally.
If they're American residents or citizens and are not breaking the law in the slightest way, then they should be proud to show their identification and ask the law enforcement authority that stop them, "how may I help you officer"?

The fact is, folks, that it's becoming a very tough time to even be a LEGAL Mexican here.

I've got many, dear LEGAL Mexican-American friends around here in Southern Arizona who are becoming very nervous.

Even those whose very productive time here dates back well before Arizona became a state.

Let's get real here, shall we?

What's dominating the woeful political chatter is the same xenophobia as that when my Irish ancestors "invaded" New England.

Blaming the victims is always the easiest and, in the current retrograde political environment, the safest route ...

Just think, if the American Indians/Native American/Indigenous Peoples had had 'immigration' laws we would be the criminals. ;)

Nobody, especially the "candidates for President of the U. S." want to blame the coporate/business sector that was/is the "magnet" for the "undocumented immigrants".
Supposedly, their "cheap labor" is the a "rising tide that lifts all boats", so our "products and services" are cheaper for all of us. Like Walmart says, "Our low prices save the American family $1500.00 per year".
Unfortunately, the down side is wages kept lower longer, health/education services costing taxpayers more, etc.

"if we’re going to vote for the best illegal immigration-basher, what’s that say about us?"

That we, as legitimate citizens, don't approve of people who illegally enter our country?

I'm sure a lot of the opposition to illegal immigration is racially motivated, but that doesn't invalidate the basic fact that this country has immigration laws that exist for good reasons, and must be enforced.

It's not exactly a heinous crime to fence-jump in pursuit of a better life, but we as human beings have a strong sense of territorialism. We feel especially violated when someone illegally enters our home country, community, or house. I suppose this is why (non-racist) Americans care more about people breaking immigration laws than people breaking other laws of similar severity.
