I live and work in Mexico City as a journalist, and my partner is Mexican. he and his friends freely use the word ‘mojado’ to refer to people who cross the border to the US. The only person who finds it offensive is me, with my European, politically correct sensibilities. I’ve gotten over it.

If the BETA’s, the Mexican government’s immigration branch can/do call their own fellow Mexican Nationals “Wet Backs” (Mojados), i.e., those trying to cross the border illegally, why is it considered condesending when an American refers to them as “illegal aliens”?
Is this similar to African Americans using the “N” word among themselves, yet an Anglo American is a “racist” if they use the “N” word. What intercultural “double standards” we impose on ourselves!

For me, it’s not all about the terms that people throw out, it’s the intonation they have in their voice when they say them. So often when I received calls after stories I wrote about English language learners in public schools, I’d get the 70+-year-old White Mesa man (a generalization, but 90 percent of the time true) telling me “all those illegals need to go back where they came from.”
I don’t mean to have a liberal leaning, but how is this different than the N-word often times?
