Guatemala is for me, one of the most beutifull countries in the world, for turism is very safe probably safer than for any Guatemalan, our problem relies in is geographical position, we are situated between the drug buyer (USA) and the seller (Colombia, Bolivia, etc.) and there you have it. Here is where the war is taking place, and no one is doing anything about it, they should legalize drugs in the US, like they did with alcohol. Then no more drug trafficking, and the problem can be taxed and controlled. I hope things change for the best soon.

I was on the number 40 Elim bus on the 13th of February, and I got off at Pasarella La Molina at Roosevelt. I was with my girlfriend's brotther and he commented that it was strange that there were no police or guards on the bus. About 20 minutes after we got off that bus the driver was shot and killed. I wonder if it was the same bus in this article, but i was sure it was on the 13th and not the 14th. I may be wrong. Anyway, I just want to say Guatemalans are great people and I hope they can solve this crime problem.

Guatemalans are not psychopaths. They are a people who have been through an extremely violent internal guerilla war which lasted 36 years, ending in 1996. The resulting violence comes from a culture of violence rooted in that time. There is violence, there is murder, but there are also real people trying to pick up the pieces and live their lives. Journalists like this educate us who live outside of Guatemala so that we can help to change the culture of violence with our awareness and activism, so that the people who want to move on toward growth and development in Guatemala without the threat of violence, can do so.

Didn't Guatemala used to be a very popular tourist destination, one of the more peaceful countries? I think I recall that something changed in the mid-1990s ... civil unrest? Are we still seeing repercussions in a society that was damaged more than a decade ago?

Luis Carlos Giron looks terrifying. If I was that guard standing behind him, I'd want to be anywhere but right there, with or without a gun. Shivers.

Thanks to Lowenstein for his brave coverage, and thanks M for posting!

Lets face it; this is not a contest, the brutality of any country against its people with sadistic actions taking place to create an atmosphere of fear, goes beyond crime for survival. These are psychopaths, pure and simple using a cause to form together and pervert life and justice.

I've heard that Mexico's violence pales in comparison to Guatemala, but this confirms it. I've also heard that undocumented Guatemalans take the jobs that undocumented Mexicans won't do in the U.S. (like roofing a house in Phoenix in July). You'll never know how many there are in the U.S. because they all claim to be Mexican and carry fake Mexican documents.

Speaking of the Gulf Cartel, what happened in Reynosa? Supposedly a higher up was killed by the police in a big shootout?
