THE BORDER REPORT

Readers are saying that Meredith Romney, the LDS leader in Chihuahua, was kidnapped today by masked gunmen. Meredith is a cousin of  Mitt Romney, the former Republican candidate for the U.S. presidency in the 2008 elections.

If the rumor is true, I wonder how much of the motive to Romney’s kidnapping is related to pure, brazen profit as opposed to revenge or a vengeance hit. The example’s been made.

In late May, a 16 year old boy from the Mennonite community in Chihuahua was kidnapped for ransom. Hundreds of Mormons gathered to demand the government intervene. The boy was later released after a small ransom was paid.

Se sabe algo?

  1. The Mormons made a stink about a Mennonite kidnapping? That’s mighty kind of them.

  8. I have yet to see anyone on this website say that traveling to Mexico is dangerous. “Tourists aren’t targets”, “you may get caught in the wrong place at the wrong time”, “only narcos are being targeted”..etc. Is it safe to say that going to Mexico is riskier today than is was three years ago? I’m pretty sure this lady wasn’t involved in illegal activity. After seeing the gruesome photos of the 11 killed in Caborca in a US stolen vehicle, hearing of kidnapping of americans and stories of full blown gun battles in city streets so close to Rocky Point it seems only a matter of time before the same happens in tourist areas as well. I’m just looking for someone to say Mexico is fooked up right now and anything can happen….travel at your own risk.

Traveling in Mexico is dangerous and anyone that does, puts their life in danger. A person would have to live under a rock not to grasp the fact that americans are a prime target for kidnapping. It blows my mind that so many americans think that Mexico is safe to travel. Just because nothing has happened to you so far, it does not mean that you are not at harms way. Use common sense. The various drug groups not only kill eachother, they have a business to make money through kidnapping citizens that they believe can pay.

  10. He lived in Mexico and I’m very glad to report he has been released. He is doing well and this is not over.

  11. This has nothing to do with him being a mormon or a Romney – it is all about money! No its not safe to travel in Mexico unless the government makes it safe for anyone and everyone to travel – This man is a good person with a good family. He was minding his own business! The guys that took him should be punished severely!!!! If not all those good people are at risk!!!! Its time the US gets involved BIG TIME in all this mess!

  14. Appears most are making comments that know nothing about what they are talking about.
She is a he. It has nothing to do with his religion. It is all about money, greed, and wanting more! His last name had nothing to do with it. He and his family are very hard working. Earned every peso they have. They are a good family, devoted to service and helping others.
Mexico is not safe, and won’t be until the government can take back into control those who believe they are above the law.

  15. Meredith Romney is a good family man and I am glad to hear that he has been released. What happened to him could happen to anyone else that travels into Mexico as things there have been going bad for quite some time now. It is sad that this kind of thing has made its way into the beautiful town of Colonia Juárez.

  16. Meredith…obvious masculine name???

  17. well, i don’t give a rat’s ass if he is a she, i’m only saying that is ass has been freed already, (after paying a juicy ransom of course) and that’s a fact.

  18. Wow, this is one knock up piece of journalism!

    “A 16 year old menonite”

Actually, the recent kidnapping in Chihuahua to hit the headlines was a Lebaronite, Mormons and Mennonites helped pressure the governor into sending troops out to look for the kidnappers.

“… revege or a vengance hit. The example’s been made”

    Whose side are you on?

“After a small ransom was paid”

The entire point of the protest when the Labaronite was kidnapped was to let the kidnappers know that there would never be any payout for kidnapping members of their community.

  20. Your safe jack as long as your not driving a big suv with dark tinted windows wearing cowboy hats!!!

Be safe cuz I know my latino ass has been safe so far in juarez partying late at night

    [Reply]

  21. hey arkad, if you are kidnapped in mexico, and your family or relatives don’t pay a ransom, you are dead, no manifestation nor protest would save your ass, i’m on the side of the facts, end of story.

    [Reply]

  22. Ilegal here in juarez even if you do pay the ransom your dead, 3 people have been kidnapped the ransoms were payed and they all still got taken out

So I made it clear, if I get picked up, oh well it was a nice life…….

    [Reply]

  23. yeah, i know, same as tijuana, but they got it worst, they kidnap poor people who work in factories and than ask their families for millions, el pinche cristal los tiene bien jodidos.

  24. I live in Colonia Juarez, Mexico. I know Meredith. He is a good man. All of us that live here try to be good Christians, work hard for what we get, and believe in honesty, justice, and Christian values. He was kidnapped for ransom, nothing more. Those thugs who want something for nothing have done this injustice. It has become apparent that it is an easy buck to steal, terrorize, and kidnap. Those in the drug business have found that it is easier to prey on the innocent than to work for an honest day’s pay.

The 16 year old LaBarron boy lived in a different town, is not a Mormon, did not pay the ransom, the state government did, and is free now.

The crime and violence here is taken to the young, old, rich, poor, and innocents as well as those involved in the drug cartels.

Lawlessness is rampant throughout the world. It is especially evident here in Mexico, and is continuing to get worse. The only recourse is to stand strong for what is right, and try to curb these kinds of criminal activities. When a government will not protect its citizens, no matter what color or religion, it is time to clean up the government, root out the narcs, and start again with honest people, if they haven’t killed them all by now!

  25. What ever happened to teaching that one basic rule ‘Do not kill’? Everywhere I look the world is cracking up, maybe it has always been there. But it is so sad when the hedonistics rule the world. I always loved Mexico, I see now I am delusional. I believed most there to be warm and caring, but this cartel stuff is like a virus, a REAL SWINE FLU

  26. Actually it wasn’t from the Menonite community. Eric the kidnapped 16 year old is from a Mormon family. He is from a polygomist Mormon family. A ransom was paid – through the state gov’t.

    [Reply]

  27. The LaBaron boy ( Eric) is not a Mormon boy. They are a group who broke away from the Mormons and formed their own church about 60 years ago, or more. They live about 35 or 40 miles from Colonia Juarez., or the Mormons. They do practice plural marriage there. That is one reason they are not Mormons. Mormons are not polygamists. They are called LaBaronites. They are American citizens, live in their own community, some live here in Mexico for a while, then in the US for a while, and some stay here permanently, and are definitely not Mormon. They do have some ties with the Fundamentalist (polygamists) in the southern part of Utah.

I am a Mormon here in Mexico, they are not Mormons, but LaBaronites. They are not connected in any way with the Mormons.

The Mennonites are one religion in this area. They came here from Canada. They are very much like the Amish, but are modernizing a little at a time.

Mormons came here from Utah, and Arizona over 110 years ago. They bought land from the Mexican government, and own and work what they have.

The LaBaronites was once a Mormon family living here in the Colonies. They broke away from the Mormon church to form their own church about 60 years ago. It was one family. They had several brothers in the family, Joel, Ervil, Verlan, Floren, and Alma. If you really want to differentiate who is who here, take a look at this site. It will help you become more familiar which religion is which.

  28. Jesus Cristo, who let Brigham Young and Joseph Smith onto the website? Don’t you have some missing golden tablets to find? No one cares if the poor kid was Mormon or Fundamentalist Mormon or Seventh Day Adventist Amish Mormon.

By the way, are the Mexican Menonite teenagers still dabbling in narco-trafficking? I heard that a couple of years ago, but thought maybe the “Mexican Menonite problem” was a bit overblown.

    Has gringo Jack been kidnapped?

    [Reply]

  29. No, Tantos.

No problems, whatsoever. We had a great time traveling the back roads up to Tubutama from Magdalena, on down through Atil, on to Oquitoa and Pitiquito, with a brief stop in Altar to chat with migrants, and on back to Santa Ana for an overnight at a local motel. Next day – Curcupe to view ruins and to take a hike through the canyon there.

Beautiful drives, especially up to Tubutama. We saw a black GMC Tahoe with tinted windows but were a bit disappointed when we caught a glimpse of the occupants – a woman with kids.

Anyway, we’re headed back tomorrow, this time for a stroll into Nogales, Sonora. We six, will once again likely be about the only norteos there, which is a pity. Because the city has been remodeling the streets with mini-plazas and turning two short streets into pedestrian-only, complete with soon-to-come fountains.

The scary stories in the US and Mexican media are working.

(Maybe I should invite Bill O’Reilly, Lou Dobbs, and Shawn Hannity to come along next time?)

  32. Religion has nothing to do with the criminals taking over all of Mexico not just Lebaron. Frankly, the Lebaron family are the only group with guts and balls to defend themselves. Look at Juarez, the deaths and total devastation that goes on by the Cartel with the populace standing by and doing nothing about it. There is a strength in numbers___the masses may not have the latest weapons but with a gun and a rifle they can defend their families and at least go down fighting. At least the Lebaron community is standing up to the mob of criminal activity. My family moved to Lagunitas Galeana when I was six with nothing to our name but a piece of land. Women from Lebaron colonia offered us vegetables, beans and corn until my Dad was able to grow our food. We are catholic but religion never was an issue. My mother loved Alma Lebaron wife of Joel Lebaron. We visited their home and they visited ours. My mom (Marselina Flores wife of Francisco Flores) did not approve of the religion but always told us to respect and be tolerant of others religious beliefs. The deaths of Benjamin Lebaron and his brother in-law are a tragedy that we all should be appalled about and fight against. At least we know who they are because their family and community are fighting back. What about all those people innocent people that have died and are now forgotten. I say, when the country, city or state can not protect its citizens, its CITIZENS NEED TO ARM THEMSELVES AND FIGHT BACK. FIGHT BACK FOR THE LOVE OF GOOD!!!! DONT LET CRIMINALS TAKE OVER YOUR LIVES.
