THE BORDER REPORT

No sé, maybe someone figured it was a good time to get into the body removal business in Sonora what with most of Sonora’s state police commanders up in Tucson for the annual conference. Thank you, LOL, for pushing the issue, I stopped at five, but no, 11 was the final body count in that Yukon popped outside Caborca this morning.

The situation was already getting hinky yesterday afternoon when the Arizona-Sonora law enforcement meeting being held in Tucson was cut short for a handful of Sonoran state police after someone opened fire on the state police headquarters in Caborca.

The meetup, PISA, for Policia Internacíonal de Sonora y Arizona, is being held at a Marriott Resort in west Tucson. I went to visit a friend last night, the hotel is under fairly tight security with local Tucson police manning barriers on the only roads in and SWAT units patrolling inside the lobby with rifles. Can’t say I blame them; a fine mess we’d be in if someone decided to launch an assault off the golf courses at Starr Pass. This year, representatives from Sinaloa, Michoacán and Chihuahua came as well; Sinaloa left early.

Caborca was already proving interesting; the commander of the local base raced back from Tucson when word came of the gunfight. Then this morning, eleven people turned up dead in a Yukon that tried to run from federal police.

I don’t think the cops did the corpse job; it’s said the bodies were already dead and the driver had simply been hauling them off when he was pulled over at a federal checkpoint. And there was a mass levantón near Caborca, Monday I think.

But that’s what I got; anyone hear anything new, feel free to share.

  6. Here’s a video ilegal found on youtube showing the gunfight that started it all, day before yesterday.
There’s a weird edit at minute five that shows a white SUV coming out of nowhere and hauling ass out of town.

  7. Goddam! This f-in bloody stuff happens, just when I’ll be taking some friends early next week down from Rio Rico where the finale will be a visit to Caborca’s fine mission!

Our journey would be first to Magdalena, on up that terrific road to Tubutama, and then on down a back road to sweet Atil, Oquitoa, and then on to Pitiquito.

Maybe we should end the trip in Pitiquito, but no way, because there’s such a fine seafood restaurant in Caborca.

The point I think I’m making is that none of this scary stuff scares me.

And so, on we go to Caborca!

    We leave early Tuesday morning…

  11. Nuevo Día claims the mensaje was written from one group to another (Niní Beltrán’s people vs Nacho Páez or vice versa) but also threatened the mayors of the Sonoran West Desert – Caborca, Tubutama, Altar and Sáric.

ilegal: They split the city, 2K runs eastern Nogales, Buenos Aires, the downtown plaza (bad move there, he’s crazy). Mayo’s people run western Nogales, the maquilas, the periferico. Highway 15 outta town’s sort of the border.
