THE BORDER REPORT

Yeah, yeah, spare me, I know. Much on the plate right now, but the situation’s under control. Familial obligations, deadlines and the general desmadre of life. That said, we’re gonna be having a Come to Jesus conversation soon. Look for it on Friday or thereabouts.

But for now, there’s some interesting developments throughout this place.

In Puerto Peñasco, Sunday night, a gunfight downtown, el Malecón. Guy went down and an ambulance took him to a clinic. The killers followed the ambulance and made staffers lie down on the floor while they finished the job. Leonel Fonseca Carrillo was his name. Nasty, nasty business that, hitting in the tourist spots. The sad reality is that if there’s one theatre in this whole country that the government needs to shore up, it’s the tourist towns. You can’t have gunfights on Obregón Boulevard in Nogales or Revolucíon in Tijuana and you can’t lay waste to Peñasco or Monterrey. Yet Monterrey was the site of a now famous jewelry store murder earlier this year and little Peñasco is all grown up now, this makes seven or eight murders this year compared to zero in years past.

Then there’s the question of Caborca. The town is abuzz with the news that Luis Sanchez Paéz, el L7, was taken out in nearby Sasabe. Sanchez had aligned himself with Ramón “Negro” Sabori and in early June, this crew had wiped out many of the Paéz clan in town. If you recall, that led to the pile of meticulously dissected bodies found in that Yukon. Expect yet more retaliatory strikes in the coming days.

Moving up to Arizona, U.S. Attorney Diane J. Humetewa announced she’s quitting early, even before confirmation hearings begin for her replacement, Dennis Burke, a Democrat political strategist. This is interesting only in the timing of her resignation. There’s been a story circulating in the law enforcement community around town that one of her prosecutors absolutely lost it a few weeks ago, suffering some sort of mental breakdown and locking himself in an office. Guards from Federal Protective Services had to break down the door. Messy, messy and completely unconfirmed. Just one of those little tales spreading around downtown.

  2. You know, I’ve been kind of wondering the same thing. Blanca Cazares’ brother was taken out in Peñasco some two months ago. I wondered if he isn’t related back to Ernesto, or maybe Vicente.

  3. Explain, if you can. Do you think Lebaron Melchor was a drug trafficker? None of the stories you’ve linked to make that implication. And, if so, how is he connected to the recently dead Lebarons? Lebaron’s a common name in Chihuahua and family ties make tenuous connections.

  4. You’d think if one was ‘In the Business” he would at least have guns to protect his family. Since these folks wer e poligamists, and some still are, there are lots and lots of them. So I guess af ew could have gone over to the dark side? I read in Utah there are some bad feeling about farm subsidies given to the LeBarons of Utah, but that could be other farmers who didn’t get as much or know how to work the system as well. I know living a farming area that anyone who appears to have money is always accused of getting it though dealing “Oregano”, a farm euphemism for pot, could it be that way in Chihuahua too?

  6. I asked Jorge Luis about what he knew about the LeBaron case and possible illegal ties. This is his answer:

The Lebaron case is being investigated by the federal police (PGR), There are supposedly 10 State Police Agents taking custody of the Lebaron community.
It was said all over the media that the Lebaron family were very good people, the only bad reference abut them was on one of those narco messages left on Juarez, it said they were involved and thats how they got killed but I don’t know how accurate that is.
Supposedly, Lebaron were killed because they didn’t want to pay for a kidnnaping and also as a reply because the government arrested 25 supposed killers of the cartel that week.

I hope this information was useful to you!

  7. gunmen walk into Juarez hospital Thursday evening and finish off a man whom they had shot but failed to kill earlier in the day

  8. Well exmex,
You have some good points. By the way Jorge Luis runs the Lapolaka.com newspaper in Chihuahua. I think the reason the 10 state Police are there is that they had no police located in the town before the murders. I really don’t see the reasoning behind the LeBarons’ book keeping and the murder of the two young fathers in Chihuahua.
So how x are you? where did you live and why did you leave?

  13. Why not get some donations from the Caro-Quintero org? Better yet I’m sure El Chapo wouldn’t mind paying a small fee for all of the exposure he gets here. Hell, he’s on the Forbes list.
