THE BORDER REPORT
Assuming everyone was in on the job, you can imagine the back-end dealings that went into this quiet negotiation. The Space Shuttle Discovery that’s set to launch will be carrying at least two flags onboard, the green, blue and yellow of the U.S. Border Patrol and the red, white and green of México.
The Border Patrol, that golden-haired child of the American federal law enforcement agencies, is riding high, shipping its colors off into outer space onboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, then sending the returning flag to the Border Patrol museum.
El Paso-born astronaut Danny Olivas will do the honors on behalf of former El Paso BP chief and current Democratic Congressman Silvestre Reyes. We’ll ignore for the moment the ongoing investigations into Reyes’ family taking no-bid contracts from the Border Patrol for those pole cameras a few years ago and look at this flag diaspora instead.
Reyes asked Olivas to take the Border Patrol flag up with him on the flight to the International Space Station and this has drummed up some media attention. It came as complete news to me that many flags even made it onto the space shuttle flights but little did I know they’re sent up all the time. Here’s an FDNY flag that went up, here’s a 4-H flag that went and here’s one that was returned and given to a South Dakota school for no apparent reason.
Meanwhile, astronaut Jose Hernandez, the son of Mexican immigrants who grew up in California, will be taking a Mexico flag with him.
“It gives me great satisfaction to be able to deliver to you the Mexican Flag that I’ll be taking with me,” Hernandez told Mexican Pres. Felipe Calderón during a phone chat over the weekend.
“At the same time, I’d like to ask for your help in forming the Mexican Space Agency that we’ve introduced to the Chamber of Deputies and the Senate,” he added, which was a nice touch. Hernandez is one of two astronauts pushing for a Mexican Space Agency and one of the reasons it hasn’t been formed yet is because Calderón resists signing off on the proposal. Doubleplusgood: Calderón laments that times are tough because remittance dollars from primarily illegal immigrants living in the U.S. are down …
Either somebody goofed or this mutual flag mission is part of the Merida Initiative that I missed or this is the Obama and Calderón administrations pushing for a guestworker initiative. You can bet BP Chief David Aguilar was a part of the discussion in the media moment so I’m sure the Border Patrol’s flag will be bigger or framed in wall-steel or something equally obvious. But if the Mexican flag escapes into the zero-gravity atmosphere, good luck catching it again.

No, this is where they are sending Mexico after the Cartels are done with them. No border problems there.

Everything. OK! I’ll talk! In third grade, I cheated on my history exam. In fourth grade, I stole my uncle Max’s toupee and I glued it on my face when I was Moses in my Hebrew School play. In fifth grade, I knocked my sister Edie down the stairs and I blamed it on the dog… When my mom sent me to the summer camp for fat kids and then they served lunch I got nuts and I pigged out and they kicked me out… But the worst thing I ever done – I mixed a pot of fake puke at home and then I went to this movie theater, hid the puke in my jacket, climbed up to the balcony and then, t-t-then, I made a noise like this: hua-hua-hua-huaaaaaaa – and then I dumped it over the side, all over the people in the audience. And then, this was horrible, all the people started getting sick and throwing up all over each other. I never felt so bad in my entire life.
