THE BORDER REPORT

Lady friend wants to keep a handgun in the house for protection. She’s asking whether a shotgun or a pistol is more efficient. I contend a pistol, specifically a 9-mm Beretta.

Obviously, I’ll encourage her to take a weapons safety course.

Your thoughts?

  2. go with a glock 40

  3. Any one you can lay your hands on at the time

  4. For home protection the best thing is a shotgun. You don’t have to aim in moment of stressful emergency.

  6. For home defense a .38 SPL, a semi can always jam, can’t never go wrong with a revolver, keep a shotgun too, just in case. Remington 870 or Mossberg 500 shotguns are very easy to use.

  7. a Taurus .357 or . 38 hamerless revolver, easy to use, no complications, compact and light, you can scare the shit of anybody only with the noise.

  8. A wheel gun in 357 is probally the best bet ,you can practice with 38 special, get use to it then go with 158 hollow points for self defense, easier to clean and take care of .A semi-auto pistol can be finicky about what loads you need ,a stove pipe or a failure to go to battery can even threw a experianced shooter off in a emergency. Then consider weak hand shooting.A shotgun in the house sounds great till you swing it into a wall trying to bring it on target or any other numerous household furnishings. Then you have state of mind, can you shoot to kill

  9. Good idea, get one of your wacked out “lady friends” a gun, Darwin Award winner there.

  10. For home defense, a 12 gauge pump action shotgun is best overall and .45 is best pistol.

  11. 9mm’s and .40’s still kick pretty well. If semi-auto is desired, I’d say a good .380, maybe a Beretta Cheetah. I do agree that a wheel gun is KISS, but .357 is quite a load and usually a big grip for some ladies. Perhaps a 38 sp, but really look at something like the Ruger SP100 in the new .327 Federal magnum. NIce light, mid size gun, great ballistic round without tearing their hand off.

Regardless. Practice and drill. Get 5 boxes and shoot them all the first couple weeks and then at least a box a month after that. CCW class is a great introduction. Provides validation and important knowledge regarding use of firearms.

  12. Nothing says “I hate you” louder in the dark of the night than pumping a shell into the chamber of a shotgun.

    Universally understood.

  13. This is just patently absurd.

  14. That is silly as hell. Sounds liuke the hicks where I live.

  15. Look, the most important thing here isn’t the kind of gun. The most important thing is regular practice so that muscle memory kicks in when/if necessary. Also helps to remind you that it’s there so you don’t sloppily leave it someplace unwise.

  16. During a stressful situation a shotgun just needs to be pointed and shot. The radius as which the pellets of the shell will expand too will be to great for anybody to walk away from.

As for handgun caliber, it doesn’t matter if you have a .45 APC or a .380 it is all about shot placement. A super strung out bad guy can survive 2 or 3 .45 shots to the body but no matter how high he is NOBODY can survive a .380 right above the lip. That being said shot placement is way to important to expect anybody, not just a woman, to be able to be accurate in a moment of extreme stress.

So, you have to go with a shot gun. Depending on where you live, house or apartment, will dictate what gauge you buy. Good luck and hopefully she will be armed but never have to use it.

  18. 12 gauge definitely. Best choice hands down. In the heat of the moment, it can be extremely hard to hit something with a hand gun. Hell, it can be hard in broad daylight with a careful aim. Add darkness to this and you are really at a disadvantage. Add penetration to this relative to other people in the house in other rooms and its more dangerous. And it is said that there is nothing more intimidating than the sound of a pump 12 gauge chambering a round. Shotgun will spray with or without lighting. And it will take down an intruder physically and psychologically.

  19. DRIFT-

Your cowboys looked sharp on Sunday, Campo was back to his old tricks…don’t worry y’all will do the same thing next year!!

  20. We design/build panic rooms at my shop in Tucson.Hide and wait it out….From poured in place concrete filled doors with Swiss hinges you can move with one finger to simple system that just makes it look like you vanished I can do them all.Just please don’t kill me after the job is done.5% of the profit will be donated to the annual Border Reporter Beach party at my place in Mexico!

  21. I personally use a Saiga-12 automatic shotgun for home protection. It cycles in such a way that it absorbs the kick and it wont go through 3 walls and kill your neighbors sleeping kid. 1st shell is bird shot, thats a warning, 2nd through 10th is double ought buck. The design of the saiga is based on the AK, very reliable.

Only drawback is you have to store it without a loaded clip, because if you leave the loaded clip in it will deform the top round. Which is bad. Otherwise it is the most perfect weapon for home defense.

    Check it out!

  22. Your lady friend can’t possibly go wrong with a 9mm Glock. I carry/place under my mattress at night the Glock 26 (Baby Glock). This firearm is simple and to the point. No need to disengage safety mechanisms of any kind, extremely light, and balls-on accurate. The only “problem” with the Glock 26 is it’s hair trigger. Then again, that hair trigger can save your life if, and when, a life/death situation presents itself.

As with ANY firearm, you first have to test them out and ensure your lady friend is comfortable and compatible with a particular firearm. Have her test out various firearms before you purchase one. Always keep in mind that different firearms require different attention, skill-sets, and can cost you more in the long run (ammunition prices are skyrocketing!).

A shot gun is silly for self-defense. I got rid of mine not too long ago. Most females cannot handle the magnitude of a shotgun, and besides, it’s a million times easier for a perpetrator to wrestle away an 18 in. barrel shotgun from a woman than a 3 1/2 in. barrel Glock! Shotguns may create a startling noise when you chamber a round, but so can a female screening at the top of her lungs threatening to shoot you!

    I’ve got 2 BEAUTIFUL Kimber 45’s, a SigSauer, and previously owned a Mossberg shotgun…

I trust my Glock 26 for home defense like no other. It sleeps under my mattress (with it’s grips slightly sticking out for easy/fast access) and my girlfriend has no worries about shooting it in an emergency.

    I hope this helps!

  23. I forgot to mention…

Snub nose revolvers (Smith&Wesson, Taurus, etc.) similar to the sleek-looking ones hot babes carry in the movies are horrible for self-defense unless the perpetrator is a couple of feet away from you! Then again, practice makes perfect and with enough time at the shooting range, one can master just about any firearm (but who the heck has the time for that!).

  24. 50 CAL :-)

  25. Tell your lady friend to stick with a revolver. I was a cop for over 20 years and handled firearms all my life. Under the stress of a life & death shooting situation, I will almost guarantee that she will not be able to properly handle a Beretta…is the magazine in? is it loaded? Is the safety on? You get the picture? I have seen many seasoned cops forget the safety is on during stress shooting practice. A revolver is a no brainer…point and shoot! Well that’s my two cents anyway…Good luck!!!

  26. Yet another vote for the revolver: .357 loaded with +P+ rounds. And not a snubbie either, but something a bit more meaty such as 4-inch Smith 686. Once she gets comfortable with it, she can even run .357 Magnum loads.

Besides the complexity of a auto loaded, she could limp wrist it (especially on a Glock) and cause a jam. And then there’s the accidental/negligent discharge aspect of a newbie with an auto. She can put six in the revolver and it can sit in a drawer for 20 years and it might still go bang. Do that with a double-stack autoloader and the spring will probably compress and cause a jam.

12-gauge? Are you kidding? She’s going to know to load a 12-gauge pump, put a round in the chamber and deal with the recoil? Not to mention holding a phone and flashlight while trying to clear her house?

Beretta’s are extremely reliable and easy to shoot pistols due to the weight and caliber, but her hands are unlikely to fit it that well. Besides, it’s an autoloader. Like all shooters, she should start with the basics and fundamentals which you only learn with a wheel gun.

And people: a shotgun with the minimal barrel length of 18.5 inches will not create this massive huge bloom of pellets going down range. In a home defense situation where she would be firing at a range of 10-feet to 30-feet the pattern is going to be surprisingly small. YOU STILL HAVE TO AIM A SHOTGUN!

Unless she is SERIOUS about learning how to properly use a firearm, she should consider a civie Taser and/or pepper spray or a big-dog.

  27. Beretta grip size too large for for most females. The revolver and shotgun advocates are on the right track for the right reasons. Another important qustion would be are their children in the home either full time or part time.

  28. Glock 17 (9mm) or 22 (.40 cal). There’s no external safety or decock/recock lever on a Glock, making them very simple to operate – just pull the trigger. I’ve fired thousands of rounds through both of these models and have never had a jam – and as long as you’re shooting decent ammo it’s not an issue.

  29. Charter Arms makes a nice lil’ wheelgun for ladies. It’s a pink .38 that is so popular that even some men are carrying it..

  30. 50 cal desert eagle blow their heads off

  31. My home gun is a 44 mag. baby. Even if I miss the’ll be in the fetal position on the ground and deaf. As for my wife, she’s trained on my Springfield XDM. Both XD’s and XDM’s come in various sizes and calibers. They also feature a cocking tab and in chamber tab that let you feel if there is a round in the chamber and if the gun is cocker by just a touch. You can tell with without having to see your gun in the dark this way. I STROGNLY RECOMEND LOOKING AT THE XD LINE.
