Lots of good guns and good ideas.

If she really wants to be safe then get a big mean looking dog. It can be the nicest dog in the world but sould look mean. Put up signs "Beware of Dog". This will stop 99% of potential home defence situations.

As far as a pistol. Have her look and hold as many as possible. There are lots of different sizes and shapes. Buying a pistol is like buying anything else. It should look good and fit properly. I also recomend training and more training. You just dont need a big pistol for home protection. A .22 Mag is very leathal up close.

Shotgun is good too. A big 12 gauge is not needed. I nice .410 is great for a woman and is still leathal. Again, its up to her to find and figure out what is right for her.

My home gun is a 44 mag. baby. Even if I miss the'll be in the fetal position on the ground and deaf. As for my wife, she's trained on my Springfield XDM. Both XD's and XDM's come in various sizes and calibers. They also feature a cocking tab and in chamber tab that let you feel if there is a round in the chamber and if the gun is cocker by just a touch. You can tell with without having to see your gun in the dark this way. I STROGNLY RECOMEND LOOKING AT THE XD LINE.

Glock 17 (9mm) or 22 (.40 cal). There's no external safety or decock/recock lever on a Glock, making them very simple to operate - just pull the trigger. I've fired thousands of rounds through both of these models and have never had a jam - and as long as you're shooting decent ammo it's not an issue.

Beretta grip size too large for for most females. The revolver and shotgun advocates are on the right track for the right reasons. Another important qustion would be are their children in the home either full time or part time.

Yet another vote for the revolver: .357 loaded with +P+ rounds. And not a snubbie either, but something a bit more meaty such as 4-inch Smith 686. Once she gets comfortable with it, she can even run .357 Magnum loads.

Besides the complexity of a auto loaded, she could limp wrist it (especially on a Glock) and cause a jam. And then there's the accidental/negligent discharge aspect of a newbie with an auto. She can put six in the revolver and it can sit in a drawer for 20 years and it might still go bang. Do that with a double-stack autoloader and the spring will probably compress and cause a jam.

12-gauge? Are you kidding? She's going to know to load a 12-gauge pump, put a round in the chamber and deal with the recoil? Not to mention holding a phone and flashlight while trying to clear her house?

Beretta's are extremely reliable and easy to shoot pistols due to the weight and caliber, but her hands are unlikely to fit it that well. Besides, it's an autoloader. Like all shooters, she should start with the basics and fundamentals which you only learn with a wheel gun.

And people: a shotgun with the minimal barrel length of 18.5 inches will not create this massive huge bloom of pellets going down range. In a home defense situation where she would be firing at a range of 10-feet to 30-feet the pattern is going to be surprisingly small. YOU STILL HAVE TO AIM A SHOTGUN!

Unless she is SERIOUS about learning how to properly use a firearm, she should consider a civie Taser and/or pepper spray or a big-dog.

Tell your lady friend to stick with a revolver. I was a cop for over 20 years and handled firearms all my life. Under the stress of a life & death shooting situation, I will almost guarantee that she will not be able to properly handle a Beretta...is the magazine in? is it loaded? Is the safety on? You get the picture? I have seen many seasoned cops forget the safety is on during stress shooting practice. A revolver is a no brainer...point and shoot! Well that's my two cents anyway...Good luck!!!
