If she really wants to be safe then get a big mean looking dog. It can be the nicest dog in the world but sould look mean. Put up signs "Beware of Dog". This will stop 99% of potential home defence situations. As far as a pistol. Have her look and hold as many as possible. There are lots of different sizes and shapes. Buying a pistol is like buying anything else. It should look good and fit properly. I also recomend training and more training. You just dont need a big pistol for home protection. A .22 Mag is very leathal up close. Shotgun is good too. A big 12 gauge is not needed. I nice .410 is great for a woman and is still leathal.
