Rocky Point Checkpoint Alert?

THE BORDER REPORT

Throwing all diplomatic considerations right out the window, the United States just slammed one of Mexico’s premier tourist cities, Puerto Peñasco, announcing the rumor that armed thugs will murder Americans on the highway on down to the popular coastal town. And they put it up days before the Memorial Day weekend; Rocky Point’s third busiest season. The U.S. State Department warning to stay out of Puerto Peñasco is a fascinating up-tick in political discourse because there’s no actual facts behind it; it’s completely based off of unsubstantiated gossip.

(It doesn’t help matters, that the idiots in the Sonora Tourism Board ran this photo as an ad in the Arizona Republic “inviting” people to come to Sonora. What the hell were they thinking?!)

The ad in the Republic launched El Sheriffato Joe hasta la luna:

Thank you, Jerry, for finding this (warning, pdf) and posting it to the comments last week.

“This Warden Message is to inform U.S. citizens traveling to and residing in Mexico of security concerns for travelers driving on Highway 8 between the U.S./Mexico border and Puerto Peñasco (Rocky Point). There have been unconfirmed reports that unauthorized checkpoints have been set up by unknown persons at night. Reports from those passing through these checkpoints indicate that the operators of the checkpoint only requested to see identification before allowing them to pass. U.S. Consulate Nogales strongly advises any traveler who must take this route do so during daylight hours.
The Consulate’s Security office has advised Consulate personnel to limit travel to major roads during daylight hours. Further, Consulate staff on official travel between cities must use armored vehicles. U.S. government employees are also instructed to follow the security practices detailed in “A Safe Trip Abroad,” which can be found at http://travel.state.gov/travel/tips/safety/safety_1747.html.
If you are stopped at an unofficial checkpoint:
1. Do not resist. Cooperate immediately and fully.
2. Stay calm, put up your hands, and comply with demands.
3. If you have a child in the car, immediately alert the checkpoint operators of the child’s presence.
At some checkpoints, motorists who have not stopped at unofficial checkpoints have been shot at and killed.”

That last line is pure, fantastical bullshit, too. Yes, people have been killed at fake checkpoints; it would be helpful to note that this has never happened at one of these Peñasco checkpoints, don’t you think?

I’ve had a few readers ask me about a Phoenix man who was allegedly murdered last week or so, while driving to Peñasco to deliver a load of goods to an orphanage. I’ve never been able to confirm it actually happened. Days later, the consulate issued this warden message, which leads me to believe they heard the same story.

A State Department source says they are following a “no double standard” rule, meaning if the State Department issues a warning to its own employees, it must also issue the same warning to American citizens.

That’s totally understandable and let’s face it, after the murders of consulate employees and their husbands in Cd. Juárez two months ago, State Department is being ultra-cautious.

Frankly, State’s probably a little pissed that the Mexicans never solved the triple murder. If you recall, they dragged out some unfortunate hood and tried to pin the job on him and that was the end of it.

This is going to send spooked Phoenix residents right into a freakout. And deservedly so. While no hard information has ever come across my desk about a fake checkpoint on the road to Rocky Point, there have certainly been fake checkpoints on most major Mexican highways. Last year, I remember writing a story about a Phoenix woman who tried to run a checkpoint on Highway 15 toward Hermosillo and getting gunned down with a fifty-cal. Earlier this year, Dos Mil’s thugs set up a checkpoint on Highway 14 toward Yecora. Hell, the mayor of a small town in that region got caught up in the blasted thing. Thus far, I have not heard of someone setting up a fake checkpoint on Highway 8 in Mexico. But the day is young and the party just got rolling.

RECENT EVENTS WHERE AMERICANS WERE TARGETED:

Jan. 6: a Los Angeles man was picked off by a group of thugs in a black double-cab truck on Highway 2 enroute to Hermosillo.

May 10, The body of Ronald C. Ryan, a hunting expedition businessowner from Phoenix, was found, murdered in Santa Ana, Sonora; where highways 2 and 15 converge. Interesting sidenote, one of the men arrested for the killing was the son of Jose Vasquez Villagrana, El Jábali; Chapo’s northern Sonora connection who last winter delivered a message from the Mexican government/Chapo, that Chapo doesn’t want whackjobs committing thuggeries in northern Sonora (but of course, we’re not protecting him). Anyway.

State’s simply not taking a chance on waiting for one to happen.

Oh and by the way; Yeyo posted a link last night; so the Mexican Army and Navy both say they do not have Nacho Coronel in custody.

Hunh.

As my border law enforcement source who tipped me off to the initial story said “Well, let’s see now if Fernandez shows up.” Fernandez, you will recall, is Diego Fernandez de Cevallos, the PAN powerhouse allegedly kidnapped, maybe murdered, right around the time we learned Nacho had been picked up.

  1. Who listens to these warnings? Remember Spring Breat, there was a warning issued against travel in Mexico and still hotel capacity was filled to 99% in tourist cities through out.

  4. This is such a major pile of crap!! I am so sick of all these “rumors” that get bad press. We just came down yesterday, the only time we were pulled over was to donate to people building a playground for the children. We feel more safe here in Puerto Penasco than in Phoenix or Tucson after dark!! Maybe this is a push by the hotels and restaurants for $$$$ to be spent in the U.S. instead of in Mexico (duh?? you think??) Puerto Penasco is a beautiful, American friendly city that has been hurt by this bad publicity. Their people welcome us with open arms, just as they have for the past 35 years that our family has been coming here.

  5. No its not intended for you to spend your money here. They are issuing an actual warning. Read it again..they are not saying not to go to Rocky point, they are saying stay off the 8 after dark. We also just came back from there and altho we didn’t have any issues..everyone was still friendly as always- we did meet a couple who had just talked to someone who was infact I’d’ by fake police. They were driving bout 10 pm. Again..no issues in rocky point..just get there safely and stay off the 8 at night!

    @ Frank

That’s nice Frank, good for you. And I look like a mediterranean version of Jolie, actually I look more like a latin version of Bellucci.

But disclosing information on a blog, whether it’s true or not, can set you up for a grand jury subpoena, especially if it has anything to do with someone’s death (because the guy that died was allegedly involved in sketchy shit).

This is how it would (possibly) play out in this situation: Federal (most probably federal) or state grand jury subpoena to the BR requesting any and all comments by Mr. Talegon, specifically related to the “shit” he loaded and unloaded, and his contact information (email). Next, an arrest warrant and an indictment.

So, while you’re fantasizing about Jolie and Alba, Mr. Talegon won’t be able to contemplate his next potential love affair.

So, no admissions, keep it simple. At this point, hearsay would be far more discreet and tactful.

    [Reply]

    FIFTH AMENDMENT Reply:

    @ Talegon

No need to remind you, but you don’t have to make any (incriminating) admissions on the BR, you don’t have to expand on anything or admit to anything.

For whatever reason, you’re under the impression that the gentleman who died, in your words, “use to take a shitload of weed to Arizona.” Given the circumstances of his untimely death, it’s quite possible. Furthermore, if it’s a factual statement, proven to be true, I’m sure it will unravel in due time.

“Saddam playing with boys would have no resonance in the Middle East — nobody cares,” one former CIA official told Spy Talk. “Trying to mount such a campaign would show a total misunderstanding of the target. 28. Seems like all of sinaloas enemies are turning against each other i read this on cartel report. Apparently miguel trevino is trying to take over zetas from el lazca.

    THE CARTEL REPORT MAY 29/2010….SPANISH .,….. EDITION / Z’S
A report issued by the State Department warned the U.S. government of Mexico, in complicity of a new alliance between the Zetas criminal group with the commissioner of the Federal Public Security Secretariat, Genaro Garcia Luna and senior officers of the Preventive Federal Police, in return for sums of millions dollars to implement an offensive by a mega operation against members of the Gulf Cartel.

The alliance, said the report confidential, was reached between Miguel Angel Treviño Morales, aka the Z 40, by a close relative who is stuck in the controls of the federal corporation, from which operating forged capture or kill their enemies.

Despite being relegated in the direct fight against organized crime by elements of the Sedena and the Navy Department, for the loss of trust and detected infiltration of narco and corruption, the Federal Police, prepared in complicity Zetas an offensive against the Gulf cartel in the border cities of Reynosa, Matamoros, Miguel German, Camargo, Mier and Nueva Ciudad Guerrero Díaz Ordaz, referred to in U.S. report, obtained from the statement of one of the closest collaborators of the 40 captured Z last week in the border girl.

To do this, the Federal Preventive Police in an unusual way, have established bases of operation in Uncle Light Hotel in the town of Miguel German, while in Camargo are located in the Hotel Arturo’s. This new offensive was authorized by Genaro García Luna and senior officers of the PFP, after Morales Treviño, as an excuse to blame through their family-contact to the Gulf Cartel of the recent murder of two police officers on the Road municipality of China, Nuevo León, raised elements in Cadereyta, zone of influence of the Zetas, who were quoted by El Flaco, Z40 lieutenant in the last Oxxo, located one kilometer before the Monterrey-Reynosa highway.

However, the above was unsubstantiated, since early Thursday, following the incursion of elements of the Secretariat of National Defense to a lair of the Zetas, located in the community of Vallecillos, Nuevo León, where in addition to confiscation an array, in that place plates were found killed by officers this criminal group. The U.S. Department of State, offered as a reward of $ 5 million for information leading to his capture, stated that since 2008, that is the modus operandi of Treviño Morales to eliminate their enemies, even to the same members of the operational structure of the Zetas, including his own leader Heriberto Lazacano Lazacano Alias The Lazca.

The records of the federal agency of the United States reveals that Treviño Morales has kept revenge and executions of members themselves the structure of the Zetas.

First, he hired a hitman to execute Efraín Teodoro Torres Z 14 or the spark in charge of the plaza of the state of Veracruz.

Then, using the support of his family within the structure of the Federal Police, provided confidential information to the Deputy Attorney Specialized Investigation of Organized Crime (SIEDO) of the Attorney General of the Republic, achieved the arrest of Luis Reyes Enriquez alias ” The Rex “or” Z-12 “in the municipality of Atonilco the Great, in the central state of Hidalgo.

Also, be displaced as a second Morales Heriberto Treviño Lazacano, by Daniel Perez Rojas alias the cheek and assigned to control the movement of drugs from Central America to Mexico through Guatemala, the Z40, filter information about your location to federal authorities attempt to capture him.

Daniel Perez Rojas, one of 31 former military Special Forces Airmobile Group (GAFE) who defected to found Los Zetas, the armed wing of the Gulf Cartel, was finally arrested by the Civil National Police of Guatemala.

The cheek was trained in the Mexican Army, which included a course of psychological warfare and special operations, provided at the military base of Fort Bragg, USA. Established himself as one of the key men next to Heriberto Lazcano, the current leader of the Zetas. He joined the expansion plans of the organization to operate in Latin America. Authorities consulted indicated that this explains the presence of “cheek” in Guatemala, until he was betrayed by Treviño Morales. Since late 2008, Miguel Angel Treviño Z40, provided information through his cousin, phone numbers and communication radios Jaime González Durán aka The Hummer, who was located and arrested by Federal Police in Reynosa.

Similarly, in November 2009, using the same method leaked information to PFP, managed to capture tlapanco Sergio Enrique Ruiz, alias “El Tlapa” principal operator of the Zetas in the states of Veracruz, Tabasco and Puebla.

In this way, Treviño Morales, intends to award the absolute power of the Zetas group and for that, similarly planned to eliminate its top leader Heriberto Lazcano.

To do this, with the help of federal authorities in exchange for millions of dollars, I plan to capture Heriberto Lazcano, having convened a meeting of the structure of the Zetas in the Rancho El Atorón in the state of San Luis Potosi.

The Federal Preventive Police mounted an operation to capture alive or dead the leader of the Zetas, however, Heriberto Lazacano managed to escape and evade arrest.

In the fray in his flight fell into a ravine confidence man Lazca and manager The Plaza de San Luis Potosi, named Peter, whose body was found three days later.

In the federal raid, managed to arrest the Chiricuas, lieutenant and right arm of Heriberto Lazcano, as well as other subject of Pagua nickname the Great, high-ranking Zetas.

In the vacuum of leadership, Morales Treviño appointed to a subject of their trust nicknamed the Pup, who retains control of that entity.

A raíz de ese ataque, en la actualidad Lazcano vive un estado de delirio de persecución, lo que ha generado problemas con los integrantes de la organización, principalmente con Miguel Ángel Treviño Morales y de su escolta, debido a las medidas extremas que adopta, ante el temor de ser traicionado por Z40 para ser detenido o asesinado, señala el reporte Following that attack, Lazcano currently experiencing a state of delusion of persecution, which has caused problems with members of the organization, mainly with Miguel Angel Treviño Morales and his escort, due to the extreme measures adopted, to fear of being betrayed by Z40 to be arrested or killed, the report said

  30. Illegal Immigrants Crime Spree in WA.

    http://liveshots.blogs.foxnews.com/2010/06/01/illegal-immigrants-crime-spree-in-wa/

One woman is dead and two others were raped recently and police say each crime was committed by a different illegal immigrant. One of the sexual assaults happened just hours before the Seattle city council passed an ordinance boycotting Arizona over its new immigration law.

Gregorio Luna Luna had a history of beating up his live-in girlfriend Griselda Ocampo Meza. He was also in the U.S. illegally. On May 1, Luna Luna was deported to Mexico. Three weeks later Meza was murdered in her apartment in a violent knife attack.

Franklin County prosecutors say Luna Luna slipped past the border again and killed Meza in front of their five year old son. He’s in the county jail awaiting trial.

A suspected rapist in Edmonds, Washington has been deported at least 4 times according to Snohomish County prosecutors. Jose Lopez Madrigal has been charged with raping a woman next to a dumpster behind a Safeway store. A witness to the attack alerted police and Madrigal was taken into custody.

An illegal immigrant just convicted of his possible 3rd strike in Whatcom county- a rape of a homeless woman- has been deported to Mexico five times.

In a previous comment that was submitted on May 15, 2010 at 8:27 PM, Fairy Dust (aka Fenix) deliberately stated: “You’re just mad because I hate illegal aliens.”

Initially, I didn’t pay attention to the underlying bigotry that he would exhibit throughout his commentary, but then I realized that he was clearly not objective and most of his comments were snide remarks against Latinos and Hispanics (whatever you prefer to be called).

Now, considering his history on the BR, my theory is that some sexy hot blooded Latin guy slept with his wife and he rocked her world. As a result, she left Fairy Dust and took his dog with her.

Conclusion: Guys, please stop sleeping with married white women. There’s enough hostility as it is, there’s no need to create anymore tension. I know, I know, Latin men are far more passionate and that quality certainly beats out reliability, but still! Keep it in your pants if the woman is married.

That’s how we end up with these random Americans that are clearly racists because some Latin jerk slept with his wife. Unless she lies about being married, then she’s a hoe bag with no morals and who ever married her is a hopeless loser.

If it is a crime to cross the border, then illegal entrants have to be counted. Criminals are criminals.

I really don’t think your numbers would add up to back your statements…not after what numbers I saw in Washington alone…more than half their most wanted criminals are illegal entrants.

    Just sayin’…

Or are you trying to say that illegal hispanics pose more of a threat than the street gangs in our inner cities or neo nazi gangs in rural america??

    Tantos Reply:

YeYo, don’t be insulted if it is true that hispanics are more likely to break the law at this point in time. If you look back into the history of America, whenever a large ethnic group immigrated and settled in the U.S. there was a backlash. Whether they were Irish or Italian or Jewish, those groups were accused of having a propensity towards crimal behavior. When poor people immigrate to the U.S, the vast majority are “have-nots” living in a country of “haves.” Otherwise, if things were so great in their home country, why would they leave in the first place? I don’t understand why it’s so surprising for people to learn that “have-nots” commit more violent crime, regardless of their ethnicity.

And by the way, the State of Washington’s Most Wanted is clearly 80% Hispanic. Can’t say how many are foriegn nationals and illegal, but I don’t know too many U.S. citizens who name their kids Hipolito, Otilio, or Abimael. I didn’t look at all of them, but I noticed a pattern of vehicular crimes. Leaving the scene of an accident is also typical behavior for someone who does not have a valid driver’s license (illegal aliens usually don’t).

This is more of Tantos hopeful thinking at work. When he can’t prove anything he wishes it’s the the way he wants to see reality. First he believed this country was meant to be a Democracy. Then he went to Europe looked around and made the claim that all of Europe has a bigger drug use problem than the US becaue he went over there and looked around for awhile. Next was the time he wanted to believe Border enforcement only get federaly investigated for watching porn, there was no way in his mind that hundreds of people that worked the border could be helping human and drug smugglers, no those courages cops would never do that.

Damn it Tantos if you wanted to make the argument that those hispanic people in Washington’s most wanted were illegal you could of said that illegals take off to their home country’s when they commit a crime thus becoming fugitives. Or that illegals tend to be more of flight risk because the tend to move cross country looking for work. At least sound informed when you are assuming shit when you have nothing solid to back it up.

By the way I spent a few years in Washington. When it came to crime Yakima seemed to ring out the loudest, have a homeboy that lives around there and I spent some time over there haging out. Also people seemed to mention Tacoma when it came to crime but I never lived there. Anyways Yakima is more of a hispanic influenced city and Tacoma is supposed to be more black influenced when it came to the streets. Of course you got the gangbanger whiteboys and girls that either act black or act hispanic. In Spokane a friend told me that two LA gangs have the most presence out there, rolling 60s and eight tray. Also the Mexicans Washington tend to be from Michoacan, especially Yakima, found a few of my relatives out there. And you know how Michoacanos get down with Meth and growing Marijuana. Hell they would have the fruit pickers out their growing weed in the owners property, we are talking hundreds of pounds. I have good memories of Washington, the hustle was always chill and good.

To me Washington was safe ass place. Then again I always compare crime to LA in the early to mid 90s, and people always say the 80s were worse but I’m too young for that era. LA today is also very safe compared to what it was, so I never understand why people say crime in LA is out of control because of illegals.

Yep and there all Washington’s Most Wanted. Told you Washington was one safe ass state. But people like you can’t help but complain about nothing. You just looked like a fool twice already.

Oh I made no mention of wether or not the people in those pictures were here illegaly or not. I just brought up your major fault in arguments. You like to assume to much and end up looking like a fool. Most Wanted traffic violaters, Oh my God, catch those dangerous criminals or I won’t be able to sleep at night. Hell I even helped you out on how you should of made your point. But you are two stupid to take advice. Are you divorced or something. Obviously you can’t pay attention and are unable to learn anything, and you get excited watching men play with balls on TV.

But what I really think is funny that you actually read all that between me and Yeyo. What the hell did that have to do with you. Tantos you get all this information and knowledge, notice how you stop using the word Democracy so freely, all that from me. Yet you still feel the need to talk trash about me. You can’t say that I haven’t tought you things with my posting. So by your statements what you think is a purse snatcher knows more, can construct an argument better than you, and has interesting things to say. Tantos you’re haging off my nut sack and at the same time trying to hate me you wierdo.

So what is it mister straight and narrow, what is Mr. law abiding citizen doing spending his time reading about my life and my info. For sure no one will read your boring life and useless minimal knowledge. How come you are reading about street gangs, prisons/jails, and drug smugglers. It has nothing to do with you and will probably never affect you.

Tantos just stop assuming you have a clue. A guy like you should be asking questions not making statements.

YeYo, don’t be insulted if it is true that hispanics are more likely to break the law at this point in time. If you look back into the history of America, whenever a large ethnic group immigrated and settled in the U.S. there was a backlash. Exactly Tantos, there might have hope for you yet. People back then cried about immigrants because suposedly they had a culture of criminality. Like people today say about hispanics. Also that they brought disease, like they say hispanic immigrants are doing. Immigrants back then also had neighborhoods were English was the second language. Natavist back then said that the Irish and Italians wouldn’t be able to assimilate. Same old same old.

On our way back tuesday, we stopped to talk to the border patrol on the u.s. side who did say that the rumors are true. In fact it’s happening often. He also had mentioned that one of their off duty patrol women had been stopped at a fake stop and that if they had known she was u.s. patrol, it could have been ugly! Despite all this we will still be back the 11th. Just passing on what I heard. The patrol officer had also mentioned that they’re required not to speak of it.
