THE BORDER REPORT

Is La Barbie, Edgar Valdez Villareal, dead? The rumor’s been circulating for about two hours now. Thank you, Doroteo Arango, for bringing the chisme to our attention.

Here is the rumor (ni descartado hasta el momento) que murio el Muñeco. But another rumor has been circulating, that Barbie was arrested which is equally rich. Both rumors have him in Taxco, in the state of Guerrero, where 15 gunmen were killed in a gunfight earlier today.

Mexican media have sources in the area telling them the gunmen worked for Barbie so it’s entirely possible that the rumors started there. We will see.

They dont want to capture him they want him dead…Thats why its the same thing they did to ole white boots..To many high ranking figures messing witht that pocho..If they where to capture him he would spill the beans on the local goverments in the south and it would taint Mexicos dirty poloticos even more on a international level..I dont think they have him alive if they have him..He is a hot box any where he goes he brings heat he was currently going at it with Hector Beltren “El H” and Sergio Villareal “El Grande” and recently they tied a narco fosa to him in Taxco, Guerrero same place where this shootout took place today and he was suposedly captured…One of his operaters ratted him out and told the feds that the director del Penal de Tuxpan in Iguala was in the fosa along with 25 other people..He is currently working hand and hand with Los Rojos an extorcion and kidnapping gang in the state of Guererro and its suroundings that had been beefing with Zetas and BLO for some time already.Rolling with a kidnapping and extorcion gang never works out for anybody that is the begining of the end for most of these guys down there. If its true this will allow a more oeacfull group to move in whether its the ZZZs (not peacefull but they wont have any foes to beef with) or H and Grande whom are rumored to have forged an alliance with the Sinaloa Federation.

Hey YeYo! Did you really know Edgar in high school?

What was he like back then? It sounds like he was kind of a joker? Can you picture him leading a platoon of mexican gunmen and shooting people?

From his pictures, he doesn’t look very intimidating. It seems like he would be one who would be easily robbed or killed. I don’t get it.

  8. Just taking the time to say thanks for some excellent reading.

This blog caught my interest about a year ago, and I’ve been following it ever since. Being a swede, I’m at a comfortable distance from the US-Mexican border, but the whole situation interests me, and I’ve been reading just about anything I can get my hands on.

    Stay gold.

More than 2,200 people have been arrested during a 22-month investigation aimed at thwarting Mexican drug cartel efforts to distribute narcotics across the U.S. and funnel guns and money back south of the border, federal authorities said Thursday.

The probe, called Project Deliverance, focused on shutting down many of the cartels’ U.S.-based cells that smuggle drugs, including cocaine, heroin and marijuana, across the U.S.-Mexico border, collect them at major distribution points like Houston and then distribute them nationwide.

Many cells also were responsible for laundering drug profits through real estate purchases and smuggling the proceeds as well as guns back into Mexico to support cartel operations, officials said.

Mexico arrests 2 in ambush that killed 12 police
Two men were arrested for allegedly participating in an ambush that killed 12 federal police officers in one of the worst drug-cartel attacks on Mexican government security forces, authorities said Thursday.

The suspects, Alain Escutia, 20, and Emilio Palacios, 22, belong to La Familia, one of Mexico’s newest and most brutal cartels, said Ramon Pequeno, chief of the Federal Police’s anti-narcotics division.

He said the two confessed to participating in the ambush Monday in Zitacuaro, a town in the Pacific coast state of Michoacan, La Familia’s home base.

A Texas-born man suspected of leading a Mexican drug cartel was charged Friday in federal court in Atlanta with distributing thousands of pounds of cocaine from Mexico to the eastern U.S. from 2004 to 2006.

Edgar Valdez Villarreal, who is known as “La Barbie,” and five others were charged with conspiring to import and distribute cocaine and plotting to launder money. Authorities are offering a reward of up to $2 million for information leading to Villarreal’s capture.

Authorities say Villarreal has become one of Mexico’s most elusive drug kingpins, and the 36-year-old’s mystique has grown partly because he was born in Laredo, Texas. Rodney Benson, the special agent in charge of Atlanta’s Drug Enforcement Administration office, said the case “strikes directly at the core of Mexican drug cartel leadership.”

Mexican troops kill 15 gunmen on Taxco outskirts
Soldiers battled gunmen for nearly an hour Tuesday on the outskirts of the popular tourist town of Taxco, killing 15 suspects as escalating bloodshed puts June in line to become the deadliest month yet in Mexico’s drug war.

Troops investigating suspicious activity came under fire from gunmen holed up in a house, the Defense Department said. It said no soldiers were hurt in the 40-minute shootout. Twenty guns and two homemade explosives were recovered, it added.

The battle in Guerrero state came one day after 12 federal police officers were killed in an ambush in neighboring Michoacan state, a stronghold of drug activity. It was unclear if the two shootouts were related.

The capture of a reputed kingpin following the death of his brother has knocked out most of a brutal Mexican drug trafficking dynasty.

Carlos Beltran Leyva was arrested in the Pacific coast state of Sinaloa. A judge ordered him held for at least 40 days while officials investigate possible charges of organized crime, the Attorney General’s Office said in a statement Sunday.

His capture came just two weeks after his brother Arturo, known as “the boss of bosses” of the cartel, was killed in a shootout with marines.

    MEXICO CITY –
A suspected drug cartel member has been arrested as an alleged accomplice in the shooting of star Paraguayan striker Salvador Cabanas, Mexican federal police announced Wednesday.

But drugs apparently had nothing to do with the Jan. 25 attack on Cabanas, who survived the gunshot wound to the head and is recovering – though he missed this year’s World Cup.

The suspected accomplice, Francisco Barreto, told police that the shooting at a Mexico City bar was over an argument about football, said Ramon Pequeno, the head of the federal police anti-narcotics division. Barreto also said the shooting infuriated his boss, U.S.-born kingpin Edgar Valdez Villarreal, known as “La Barbie.”

The trouble started when the alleged shooter, Jose Balderas Garza, questioned Cabanas’ scoring ability and the football player responded angrily, Pequeno said.

Later, Balderas and Barreto followed Cabanas to the bathroom, where Balderas shot him, Pequeno said. Balderas was identified on surveillance camera footage at the bar but remains at large.

Cabanas, who played in Mexico for Club America, would have been Paraguay’s starting striker in South Africa.

Paraguayan President Fernando Lugo has used Cabanas as a source of inspiration for the country’s team, asking the players to remember the injured star if they encounter difficult moments at the World Cup.

Paraguay, which is leading Group F with four points, faces New Zealand on Thursday. The South American country is hoping to advance to its first ever quarterfinal.

Barreto, who was paraded before reporters Wednesday, joined the Beltran Leyva drug cartel in 2007 and worked as a cocaine dealer under Balderas, Pequeno said.

Barreto told police that both Balderas and Cabanas were regulars at the bar – a noted hangout for athletes and entertainers – and knew each other, according to a federal police statement. The two suspects entered the bar with eight bodyguards and were not checked for weapons before taking their regular tables.

After the shooting, Barreto and Balderas left the bar with no opposition from security personnel, according to the statement. Later, Barreto said, he learned from Balderas that Villarreal was angry about the football player’s shooting.

Mexican authorities say Villarreal is waging a bloody battle for control over the Beltran Leyva drug cartel, whose leader, Arturo Beltran Leyva, was killed in a shootout with marines in December.

Villarreal, who was born in Texas, is wanted in the U.S. and Mexico on drug trafficking charges and has a $2 million bounty on his head.

Federal police said Barreto was arrested Tuesday in Mexico state, which borders Mexico City. Two other suspected drug dealers were arrested with him. They were found with drugs, guns and ammunition
