THE BORDER REPORT

Milenio and El Universal are both confirming that Nacho Coronel Villarreal died in a shootout with Mexican federal forces a short time ago. El Universal has a much more detailed preliminary story, saying the Feds had moved in on six houses searching for Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán in Jalisco when they engaged Coronel.

Curious. If you’ll recall, this past May, border law enforcement sources told me Nacho had been arrested in Guadalajara. They expressed frustration that the Mexican government had not admitted to the arrest and everyone presumed Nacho had bought his way out of that one. Was there a traicíon leading up to today’s killing? We’ll find out. Press conference at 7:30 tonight in Mexico City. The 56 year old “Rey del Cristal” was one of the leaders of the Sinaloa Cartel and was first indicted in the U.S. on cocaine conspiracy charges in 2003.

Now we wait and see if the other Sinaloans gave him up or not. In early 2009, Nacho and Chapito were up here on the border holding a meeting with Phoenix-based traffickers in Nogales and Sonoyta so I can only assume they were friendly then. But that was a year ago and a year to these guys seems to be a lifetime.

  1. He’s dead! press conference will be held @ 7:30 mexico time i believe
he was killed by special forces ad 10 of his men were captured. Its going to get ugly

  2. This shit is going to get uglier than it already is. After 30 years and authorities knowing his location all of a sudden they decide to move in on him and take him out. Someone is definitely cleaning the landscape and every alliance should be questionable from here on out.

  9. I’m depressed. This guy was old school. Don’t make sense that this guy was out in the open like that. Whoever benefits from this, it sucks. Is all of this killing right? It’s turning worse everyday. I hate to say it guys, but when they are done using Chapo up, he’s dead, too. Who are the good guys anymore. Amado Carillo was one of the good guys, in my eyes. Whenhe died, it all went to hell. I am honestly sadened by this. You mean to tell me that some one like Nacho gets smoked, but some dirty fook like 2k is still alive and well? Total bullshit!!!! He was a bigger target, but the whole thing smells like shit!!

And I understand that, but please don’t tell me that you expect any of them to live a long prosperous life – Carrillo Fuentes, dead at 41 and Beltran Leyva, dead at 48. Not to mention Escobar, dead at 44.

You see the pattern; the majority of them are either dead or in prison. I doubt any of them are making plans to retire in Acapulco.

  12. Word is he was starting his own cartel and wanted nothing do with chapo anymore. If you recall all the attention he was bring to the federation after burning up those people who took his kid. chapo didn’t like the attention he was bringing so he put his ass on check and nacho wasn’t having It . I think chapo was behind this he was probably in Guadalajara too for a meeting with nacho and after nacho told him he was starting his own cartel and was done taking orders from el chapo . So chapo called in his special forces right after he left the meeting which we all know is the Mexican military . El Jefe de jefes and nacho must be talking shit about el chapo right about now.

  16. Yeah, he was a low key old school type of leader, it is fooked up that he gets gunned down and guys like Lazcanzo are still running around, I hope Sinaloa fills his shoes quickly, before his territory turns into another war zone, like after the Arturo Beltran. This really surprises me, Teo, Muletas, those guys were destined to fall, but thigs guy was like a legend, bigger then life, and untouchable, I guess this is kind of a lesson. I’m not sure about the validity of always the rumors about Chapo setting everyone up, and doing all this dirty shit, he seems to be the scapegoat thee days, esp. after the Forbes list. I can only see more violence coming from this, as Juarez and Beltran Leyvas try to further their position against CDS. And, by the way, reports did say that Muletas thru Teo was affiliated/working with/for Sinaloa, thru Mayo Zambada.

  18. For everone who constantly says Chapo must of got fed up and gave Nacho up or he gave ABL up, or he gave that guy up or this guy up. It ridiculous,Chapo isn’t God, he is in as much danger of getting killed or arrested by gov. forces as Nacho and ABL were. So enough about Chapo having all the forces of the MX gov. at his disposal to take down Nacho or any others just to save himself or because he had a falling out with them. All of those who have such an opinion need to take some time and think before making such simpleton like statements.

    [Reply]

    Capitalist Pig Reply:

The simplest explanation is often the most correct one. Do you think that the GOM REALLY wants to crush the cartels? Are you as much of a simpleton in thinking that the GOM is REALLY battling against all the cartels equally? C’mon, man…To say that he is “in as much danger of getting killed or arrested by gov. forces as Nacho and ABL were” is really Pollyannish…

The GOM has picked a side, and for the most part, that side is Chapo’s.

    [Reply]

    J Reply:

And in this case the simplest answer is that Chap had Coronel killed, by Mexican Special forces because he was going to break away on his own, and couldn’t risk the competition or work it out another way? Guys that have been working together for 10 years? And Chapo also gave up Arturo Beltran Leyva? Come on. I mean it’s a theory, but in my opinion not a very credible one, and def. not the simplest answer, that the Mexican government is serving Chapo, taking him out creates more problems then it solves, esp. for a man at war with three different cartels.

    [Reply]

    Valentina Reply:

Everyone is entitled to their opinions and everyone is more than welcome to brainstorm theories, but that’s all it is – opinions, plenty of gossiping and wild theories.

Frankly, I think a lot of guys gossip more than women.

    [Reply]

    Michel Marizco Reply:

Chapo didn’t give up Arturo, but he did give up Alfredo “El Mochomo” Beltrán Leyva.

    [Reply]

    Valentina Reply:

Of course, because your sources said so and they confirmed it with Guzman. So it makes a lot of sense that the Mexican media speculates it’s true, because they must be getting their information directly from Guzman and Beltrán Leyva (who is probably livid that he’s in prison and Guzman is not and not to mention the fact that his brother is dead, because he’s a big badass).

Anything for the sake of coverage, right?

I don’t want you to ‘wait and see’ if the Sinaloans gave him up or not. I want you to prove it.
And no more assuming, like you were assuming about who was friendly with who a year ago. And none of the ‘I heard’ or my ‘reliable sources said’ stuff either.

    Prove it.

5a Rummor has it that 7′s boy was picked up by 14′s people
5b Rumor of 14 getting picked up by Soldiers in quila and that he was able to buy his way out. (someone may have had big plans for him and needed him free)
6 Nacho is gunned down. Leaving a large void to fill. (When does JT get out?)

Que el Chapo no es padrino del hijo del 7? If I recall that is how their both compadres but then again I may be wrong.

El JT is not returning to Sinaloa ever again. El M1 has to go at it alone now that JT’s case has been suspended, sealed, and most likely turned informant ala Osiel Cardenas. Don’t blame him though why rot in jail for the rest of your life when you could live a new life wherever they send you for giving them outdated information.

    [Reply]

    Tu Padre Reply:

If JT was an informant they would have cleaned house already and wiped them all out. They would have never allowed the recent wedding tying the two families together.

He’s spilling out the beans left and right to save himself from a life sentence. It’s old information anyways so he’s playing his cards right. There’s no other reason his case got suspended and sealed. Are you talking about Ivan’s wedding?

    [Reply]

    Tu Padre Reply:

JT is getting out at the beginning of next year, he has already been tried and sentenced. The sealing of the case is all strategy against el nino. The corridos are already saying that the reigns to his administration will be returned to him upon arrival. Zerafin & Yameli wedding.

    [Reply]

    El Doble J Reply:

Those corridos are all wishful thinking. The only way he gets out next year will be if he testifies or provides damning evidence against El Nino. In that scenario JT will never return to Culiacan and Manuel better flee immediately because you and I know Mayo will take revenge on him.

  35. Durango esta de luto por La muerte del “Cachas de diamante”..Holy shit seems super duper oficial he is dead and the worst is yet to come.I need a body and none has been brought to light as of yet, it might be premature to ask for it since this is breaking news but part of me still holds on to the fantasy of some kind of error..But all signs point to the worst.
–Chapo and Nacho had a rupture over a certain kidnaping of someones wife in Sinaloa whos sister is maried to one of Chapos imidiate relative..Remember that??But I doubt Chapo has anything to do with this because he would be a dead man via Mayo Zambada..Chapo has never been bigger than Nacho and Nacho has provided many of nice places to hide in the Sierra de Durango..Chapo aint no bigger than the next one so everybody quit griping his nuts cause he might be next..
–Juarez Cartel promised to stop the car bombs if a big Sinaloa fish was brought to justice last I heard, so it could be the goverment actualy doing their job since Cevallos hasnt apeared yet and Nacho was relased supposedly..
–Nacho has been beefing with Zetas from Durango all the way Jalisco..8 heads in Durango where Zetas trying to establish themselfs and make a move to the south..Confirmed that yesterday threw a friend who actualy lives in DGO city and saw one of the heads while driving around..
    – Why not the Marina?? Sure Chapo has pull within the ranks of the Mexican Military but he isnt god. The military operates in Zonas and this was the 15 zona historicaly not Chapos but has been known to mingle with others like FM and CDG not to mention Lazca an Nacho as well..
–Nacho had been pegged since his meeting with El Mini then Mini was killed by nobody knows..
–He was suposedly captured then relased in exchange for Cevallos but nothing was ever mentioned or heard about Cevallos since..
–4 days ago members of Familia Michoacana where captured in Jalisco with a huge arsenal of weapons one of them being Valdemar Hernandez Barajas or (Servando Gomez Martinez..real name) the suposed son of La Tuta but later was found not to be..He was sent to advance into Jalisco but failed..

To sum it up you have to look at who would benifit from his downfall and that would NOT be the Sinaloans thats for sure..The only people that could benifit from this would be the Zetas, Familia Michoacana and the Mexican goverment..Nacho was also the king of meth and was competing for that tittle with the Familia but at the same time was beefing with Zetas..He was alos beefing with BLO over the death of his son and the horrific murder of Pepino but they dont have the pull that they used to have especialy in Jalisco or 15 Zona, so they seem to have lost a foe by way of another foe..The thing that gets me the most being from Durango is this is an oportunity for the ZZ’s to move in and also the Juarez cartel..I suspect they will bump into each other on there way in and the blood will flow threw Durango like it never has before..Not to metion the mess thats about go down in Jalisco..
He went down in a gun battle and lost he even took military personel with him on his way out. and I guess if you choose to live that lifstyle thats a hell of a way to go out, I rather be alive personaly but to each his own….Arriba Durango Raza!!

I really hate to sound like a nutjob, but really? The same way as Nacho, and no picture? I really believe that he (NACHO) isn’t dead.

its just these guys have brought so much death everywhere. maybe some are “gentlemen” in the grand scheme of things, but the cost in human life that they are responsible for, directly and indirectly calls for only one sentence on them. If they are arrested, they live a pretty good life and direct many things from the jailhouse……..I truly believe that the only way to confront the ongoing problem in Mexico is via their own practice. As long as Mexico restricts the use of weapons to those who respect the law……the dark side has the upper hand. Allow the people to be armed and see the difference. Arizona and Texas have the most liberal laws in possessing weapons……..look at the results. Save for a cacahuate or two that flies off the deep end, our ability to protect ourselves keeps much in check. Look at Chicago, where they lead the country in murders and worse in the black and brown barrios. Clearly the criminal element rules. New laws were just passed, watch how the landscape will change, give it a chance. Nacho was indeed old school, and although old school was very able to kill and often did kill, they seemed to keep it in their world, nonetheless he decided to take on authority and paid the price. When old school and “gentleman” of the old trade can’t reign in peace, my friend its out of control and at that point in that chaos you answer fire with fire. I am glad the military learned the lesson of the death of Beltran Leyva, and no trophy shots surfaced. I have to disagree with you…..the time has come to face the challenge face to face in a hail of lead. Johnny Glock travels with me on my Harley, he is always ready to take on some fool that may try something. The biggest difference between us and the place south of the line is we are ready and willing to take our chances in a court of law should “Johnny” need to assist. It aint so down there, and the honest, hard working respectable people, of which there are many, need Johnny or Juan to help them.

I hear you. But I wish for peace above all else. All this killing is bad. Maybe some of these people need to be stopped some how. But some of these guys are larger than life. If there was no demand there would be no suply. So many things need to change on this side of the border, to make Mexico a more stable country. The word war is a negative.

Precisely! Kill the demand, you kill the supply……BUT and this is a HUGE but, they both have to be attacked at the same time.

Rabbit wernt you praying to god for the death of your freinds enemies a few comments ago??
At what point do you not condone the violence.
Every one killed has family and friends wanting to get revenge.

I wasn’t screaming revenge. I am telling you that those people are seaking their revenge. Its my problem. I just know them. Is what it is. I can’t change it.

  38. Lets stop blaming demand on the problem because the demand has been there since the early days and the violence was never like this. The real problem down south is corruption at levels of the mexican government and the greed of the cartels wanting to control all corridors to smuggle the drugs. Lets not forget that all cartels have had their own corridor to smuggle drugs and the violence had been minimal at best. There’s blame to go around on both sides but the real problem was created by all the greedy bastards that have allowed it to get to the point that’s out of control and they have no idea how to stop it now.

Look, its not that I don’t somewhat agree with you, but a lot of this chaos is what our government wants. Don’t kid yourself. The Mexico problem was created here.
