Nine Arrested in ICE Agent’s Killing, but Questions of Torture Persist

THE BORDER REPORT

The Mexican Army arrested nine suspects in the murder of an American federal agent working in that country. Officials are calling the shooting a case of mistaken identity. The Obama Administration has lauded the Mexican government for its fast work.  But some are suspicious of the arrests. Six of the nine suspects were paraded in front of the media early Thursday. In this photo from El Universal, Jesus Iván Quezada Peña, number three in the lineup, has both eyes swollen shut, his mouth bleeding and bruised. Another’s face was splotched in purple and black.

The Army said the six men and three women were working for the Zeta cartel. They say the gunmen mistook the agent’s dark SUV for that of a rival drug gang and that’s why they opened fire. (Pictures courtesy, El Univeral)

Texas Congressman Michael McCaul says that’s not true. He says the Zetas knew exactly who they were killing.

“We have an agent who survived this, thank God,” McCaul said. “And his firsthand eyewitness account is that they yelled out to them that were Americans and they were American diplomats.”

Roderic Camp, an expert on Mexico’s military, says those arrested looked like they had been beaten, something past Mexican administrations would have tolerated.

“If you use physical abuse or some kind of torture to generate a confession, you risk creating a guilty party who may be guilty of plenty of things but not that particular crime,” Camp said.

The U.S. Justice Department applauded the Mexican government’s efforts through a written statement but refused our request for an interview. Congressman McCaul says he’s disappointed by the U.S’s approval of the Mexicans’ fast arrest.

“It seems to me that it’s kind of an attempt to downgrade this episode and maybe kind of sweep it under the rug,” McCaul said.

He and other Republican lawmakers are calling for the suspects to be extradited to the U.S. to stand trial.

  5. At least the mexican army doesn’t chop off their heads and toss their nude bodies on a busy street.

someone on this site will find the moral equivalent to what these cruel barbarians do to what the mex military’s form of enhanced interrogation did. burning someone alive or chopping his head off and stringing his intestines along a sidewalk is not the same as slapping a thug silly until he fesses up but rest assured, some pendejo will try to say its worse.

    Michel Reply:

That’s a specious argument. How do you know that these people here, these nine, were involved in these atrocities you speak of? For that matter, how do you even know they’re thugs? And, do you think the government of Mexico should use the same tactics as those employed by the very criminals they’re trying to stop? Go back in history and read about the Moscow trials from the Russian Revolution. It’s a good example of this kind of behavior.

question for michel….why do you think the majority of people in mexico and the united states blame all bad things that happen in mexico to los zetas (i mean like kidnapping extorsion and this american dude? another question…..everytime there is a US citizen killed in mexico why does everybody assume that they are inocent?

    [Reply]

    AZTXican Reply:

Never guessed it would be you Michael. You didnt have to go that far back for examples of forced confessions. While in no way do i agree with the torture techniques that the mex feds employ, the strong arm tactics do work very effectively. I have seen them used in Tamualipas as a PI back in 96. If used with measure you will get the right guy everytime unlike here in the US that let guilty people run free all day long. Just ask any cop and they will tell you its nearly impossible to get a guilty verdict. You can get away with just about anything you want in the US. the people in jail are the ones that simply want to be there or are to stupid to ask a fellow criminal how he beat his rap.
Three of the nine thugs were massaged nicely but the other 6 were’nt. i bet the six confessed with details and the three holdouts payed.

But remember that many pesados are living a double or triple life, and they don’t need the control of a city or region. They just want to do bussiness, not always the more violent or scary is the richest or biggest…..

I doubt it, the drones fly higher than 50,000 feet, for the same reason they fly so high because that is their purpose surveillance, no stinger can reach it. bringing down a helicopter or low flying plane yes, but not a drone… they should bring in an A-10 and smoke his ass out from the sinaloa mountainsss..
