THE BORDER REPORT

The Tohono O'odham Indian Reservation has issued a travel advisory for the cities of Magdalena de Kino, and Santa Ana, Sonora, after several small flashpoints of desmadre struck the area over the past 24 hours. And no wonder. Last night, I'm told, a group of tribalmembers ran into some sort of convoy as they were traveling into Sonora for this week's San Javier Francisco Festival, a rather splendid gig that attracts a few hundred thousand people every year. My guess is the tribalmembers were crossing the San Miguel Gate into Cochi Feo when they ran into the crew. Then, (and a good ass-kicking to me for showing up a day early to the party), local drug dealing gang, Los Jabalíes, got into a gunfight with another crew early this morning in Santa Ana, about 12 miles south of Magdalena, scaring hell out of everyone. The most hard-core of religious followers engage on a trek from Nogales, Sonora, to Magdalena, a 65-mile walk down Highway 15 (which in and of itself oughtta show the spirits their profundity of commitment since I saw a good dozen of them almost mowed down walking in the dark last night ... ) It's too bad, that festival is really a good time. I've got some video I'm putting up later tonight from my trip down yesterday (soon as I get video-editing down).
