THE BORDER REPORT
I guess we should have seen this coming; Republican Congressman Jim Kolbe's spokeswoman Korenna Cline turned in her resignation today, sending a brief note to all reporters: "It was a pleasure working with all of you. I have decided to pursue another job opportunity and today is my last day." It was Cline who told the Washington Post that her boss received complaints from a former page about "creepy" emails Foley had sent him, though Kolbe never actually saw the nasty things. Kolbe saw the emails back in 2001 or 2002. The day before that, she told the Post Kolbe had been shown the e-mails. The ensuing contradictions are incredible. Can you imagine the conversations that must have gone on in that office after the Post story broke? It raises many questions. Kolbe released a statement in time for the second story saying he was never shown the e-mails and didn't know they were sexually explicit. Four days later Cline is gone. I do wonder though, who's having it out for Kolbe. Yesterday we learn that Kolbe may head The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, a program he helped determine funding for. Two years ago, he told PBS he thought funding the program had "brought attention worldwide to this, and it has brought a lot of other governments into it." Well, it certainly has. Everybody knows about the fund and the possibility that he might head it. This comes within the last two months of the Republican's Congressional career after 21 years in office. Why now? Who's setting the guy up for a disgraced last six weeks? Someone is evidently talking and while Cline did an arguably stupid thing by talking freely to the Post - however "vague" she may claim the conversation was - there does seem to be an intense attack on Kolbe's credibility.
