THE BORDER REPORT

It was a wild, threat-laden week in Magdalena de Kino, between bomb threats at a school in Santa Ana, Wednesday, a bomb threat at the mayor's office in Magdalena, Tuesday, a gunbattle in Santa Ana, Thursday, an evacuation by the Tohono O'odham, Thursday, then another bomb threat in Magdalena, Friday night.

The bastards sure tried to ruin everyone's good time. This makes me think the threats were either initiated by bored youths (predictable) or politically motivated (awful) to keep an air of instability brewing, particularly after the Grito Grenade attacks in Morelia last September. As usual, the threats are perpetuated by realities. The car-jacking of a group of O'odham and the gunfight in Santa Ana really did happen, the bomb threats did not.

But in the interest of peace, here's a few photos I shot in Magdalena de Kino last Thursday during the festival.

Padre Kino's statue gets a touch-up before the feast begins

The Danza del Venado begins in the church square.

Manuel Garcia's walked the 65 mile pilgrimage for 18 years.

Padre Kino's remains buried in the city center.

The Danza continues.
