Confirmed: Gavilan Taken Out

Jul 13th, 2009 | By Michel Marizco | Category: Chismes, General News

THE BORDER REPORT

Leonel Páez Benitez, aka El Gavilan, was killed a little while in Caborca after a gunfight outside the city. That's a good hit, something akin to El Ingeniero or JT being taken out. I'm still making calls but we'll have more information in a while.

Páez has been wanted for quite awhile, at least as far back as 2007 when former Mexican Army Gen. Sergio Aponte put a bounty on his head after his people took down a Mexican Army plane that summer.

Chismes: Feds Taking Fire Again?

Jul 10th, 2009 | By Michel Marizco | Category: Chismes

THE BORDER REPORT

I'm hearing that a pair of U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service rangers were shot at again in the Buenos Aires refuge southwest of Tucson. That's the second incident in a month's time; the first happened in June, pair of men firing a nine-millimeter at rangers on ATVs.

Don't know yet if anyone was hurt.

Chismes: Mormon Leader Kidnapped in Chihuahua?

Jun 16th, 2009 | By Michel Marizco | Category: Chismes, General News

THE BORDER REPORT

Readers are saying that Meredith Romney, the LDS leader in Chihuahua, was kidnapped today by masked gunmen. Meredith is a cousin of  Mitt Romney, the former Republican candidate for the U.S. presidency in the 2008 elections. If the rumor is true, I wonder how much of the motive to Romney's kidnapping is related to pure, brazen profit as opposed to revenge or a vengeance hit. The example's been made. In late May, a 16 year old boy from the Mennonite community in Chihuahua was kidnapped for ransom. Hundreds of Mormons gathered to demand the government intervene. The boy was later released after a small ransom was paid. Se sabe algo?

¿Teo?

Jun 16th, 2009 | By Michel Marizco | Category: Chismes, General News

THE BORDER REPORT

Those fine little rumors just keep going. Clearly there's something here. The Mexican Army arrested four men a few minutes ago. The rumor is that at least one of those men is a big fish. Before that arrest was announced, a columnist from some Mexico City newspaper wrote a brief saying that Eduardo Teodoro Garcia's been arrested in Tijuana.

Last Friday, the rumor that Teo had been arrested was circulating through Hermosillo.

Something's up and it should be good.

Chismes: Tumbaron al Teo?

Jun 12th, 2009 | By Michel Marizco | Category: Chismes, General News

THE BORDER REPORT

The rumor floating around these parts is that El Teo has been detained. Teodoro Garcia Simental, the principal rival of the Arellano Felix family in Tijuana, has been waging war in that city for two years. Don't yet know that it's true, but if it is, hijole.
