THE BORDER REPORT

So it seems BorderReporter.com's been invited to a little party in the next few days, northern Sonora, where, readers tell me, a gunfight's been brewing for a while between the Jaibiles and a few others. We shall see.

Plane Crash or Not?

THE BORDER REPORT

There seems to be gross amounts of misinformation hitting the press about that missing plane carrying the top figures of the U.S.-Mexico International Water and Boundary Commission. And I don't think it's the press's fault, but it does have me wondering if the story's being, shall we say, handled.

The Mexicans are saying they know where the plane is while the Americans are saying they do not know.

Citing Chihuahua Gov. Jose Reyes, The Associated Press reported yesterday that the Cessna 421 had been found near Ojinaga and Presidio. The governor's office retracted that report this morning, telling the ABC News affiliate Reyes had based that off initial reports.

THE BORDER REPORT

Something strange is brewing in the U.S. Attorney's Office for Arizona and I have a sneaking suspicion what it may be.

The federal prosecutor's office has been declining some significant cases in the past year and I wonder if it's because the attorneys are buried with immigration cases. Homeland Security started pushing for prosecution of the migrants it captures in its Arizona sectors last year, part of its latest strategy called Operation Streamline. Take a look at this year-old release from Customs and Border Protection; 1,200 immigrants were prosecuted from December 2006 to July 2007 in Yuma alone.

Arturo Beltrán Arrested?

THE BORDER REPORT

Well, today's been an eventful day, with narco-traffickers playing out more media fodder than the Democratic National Convention, a dozen decapitations in Veracruz and then a juicy bit of gossip that for the moment, is merely gossip.

The Get Shorty coalition had a busy night last night putting up those narco-banners throughout the entire country, from Hermosillo to Coahuila to Quintana Roo to Veracruz. The banners all say much the same thing, tying the local politicos back to Joaquín Shorty Guzmán.

THE BORDER REPORT

So let's say you live in a border town, say Agua Prieta. And let's say you're a well-known businessman who some Web site finds a story about but won't mention your name because the guy running the thing feels a little sorry for you.

So let's say Tuesday night you get a call on your cellphone and let's say the guy on the other end tells you he's kidnapped your teenage daughter and wants $200,000 (USD) for her release. And you're supposed to leave the cash at a money-exchange place downtown.
