HERMOSILLO, SONORA – The convoy of Humvees passed me on the highway heading into the city, 11 khaki colored machines loaded with 15 to 20 men apiece. Each man wore a flak helmet and carried an AR-15 rifle, the trucks riding close, stopping as a unit, waiting for a lagging deuce-and-a-half to catch up, then moving in.

So let's say you live in a border town, say Agua Prieta. And let's say you're a well-known businessman who some Web site finds a story about but won't mention your name because the guy running the thing feels a little sorry for you.
So let's say Tuesday night you get a call on your cellphone and let's say the guy on the other end tells you he's kidnapped your teenage daughter and wants $200,000 (USD) for her release. And you're supposed to leave the cash at a money-exchange place downtown.

Conflicting reports are giving different tallies for how many officers died this morning in Culiacán, Sinaloa. Milenio reports five federal police officers were killed while El Debate, the Culiacán daily states two.
Meanwhile, the Mexican Army's reinforcements, some 2,000 strong if the numbers from last week were sustained, is beginning to sour the population. One PAN senator says she's filing a complaint to keep the Army's investigators from seizing the motels and money-exchanging stores that proliferate throughout Culiacán.
