Army Raids Caborca

THE BORDER REPORT

El Imparcial is reporting that the Mexican military has raided 25 homes in Caborca since 700 troops arrived Wednesday evening. They attribute all the properties to the Beltrán Leyva family, one of whose members, Alfredo Beltrán, was arrested in Culiacán, last Monday. So far, the most interesting item found was a 50-cal. machine gun. If you recall, last autumn, someone in the area shot down a Mexican military plane with a 50-cal. And Caborca is an old story when we talk about narco-trafficking. Recall that the Caro Quintero family, the Guadalajara Cartel that killed DEA agent Kiki Camarena, are all from Caborca. Check in a little later. If some people are correct, today should be an interesting day.

THE BORDER REPORT

You've probably already seen this off the wire, but if you haven't, a brother of the family that controls the Arizona border at Nogales, the Beltrán Leyva family, was arrested earlier today in Culiacán, Sinaloa.

Mexican special forces paratroopers captured Alfredo Beltrán Leyva in the city this morning. El Debate newspaper in Culiacán is reporting that he went peacefully.

This arrest will have a significant change in the dynamics of the narco families in Sonora and Sinaloa.

Beltrán Leyva is one of five brothers controlling the Arizona Sonora region. There's more to tell, I'll be updating later tonight.

THE BORDER REPORT

Before I forget, let's all wish Joaquín "Shorty" Guzmán Loéra a very happy seven year anniversary. Today marks the seventh year on the run since he was rolled out of the Guadalajara maximum security prison in a laundry cart. Well, he hasn't exactly been on the run. He's stayed pretty busy building up the Sinaloan narco-syndicates. He's never had Amado Carrillo's charms, but for sheer staying power, nobody alive anymore can compare to Guzmán. I wonder what he's doing to celebrate.
